Bad weather gets people knitting

Posted on in Business News, Creative News

The post Christmas stormy weather seems to have encouraged more people to cast on. saw sales rise 23% on 29th December as high winds and stormy weather swept the UK. The extreme weather conditions clearly reminded the nation why we need winter knits as knitters logged on in their droves to stock up on yarn and other knitting essentials. Sales peaked again on New Year's Day as the bad weather continued to keep many inside.

January is traditionally the busiest month in the knitting calendar and it seems this year won't be any different. Online knitting retailer predicts Saturday 18th January will be the busiest knitting day of the year. Saturdays see the most number of Google searches for knitting and based on previous trends and the long range forecast for an extremely cold snap, estimates that sales will peak at 4pm on Saturday 18th January.

LoveKnitting saw their busiest day ever on the site on Saturday 4th January, which saw visits to the site peak at the highest point in 18 months during the day. The 18th January is however expected to top this.

It is estimated that there are around 7 million knitters. Knitting has seen a gradual rise in popularity over recent years fuelled by celebrity knitters, the trend for making and mending and the rise in under 35s taking up the hobby. Celebrity craft queen Kirstie Allsopp was voted best celebrity knitter during National Knitting Week last October.

According to Google trends, Google searches for ‘knitting ' have increased by 30% in the UK in 2013. There has been a 430% increase in searches for ‘knitting for beginners' in the last 5 years in the UK.

Looking at global Google trends, the term "knitting" has been gradually declining over the last 8 years, but this December / January is the first year to buck the trend.
